ॐकार · The primal sound

The island that is shaped like Om

Presiding deities: Lord Shiva as Omkareshwar — a swayambhu (naturally formed) linga — with Goddess Parvati, on the island whose very name comes from Omkar, the primal sound of Brahman.

ॐ नमः शिवाय ॐकारेश्वराय

Omkareshwar is the fourth Jyotirlinga, unique for sitting on an island in the Narmada that naturally forms the shape of the sacred syllable Om (ॐ). According to the Shiva Purana, when the Vindhya mountain worshipped Lord Shiva here, the Lord manifested in two forms — Omkareshwar on the island and Amareshwar / Mamaleshwar on the south bank — and they are counted together as the fourth Jyotirlinga (some traditions count them as the 4th and 5th). Devotion here is incomplete without darshan of both. It was also at the nearby cave of Govindapada that Adi Shankaracharya is said to have received diksha from his guru.

History & heritage

Mandhata’s island, Shankara’s diksha

The island is named after the legendary King Mandhata of the Ikshvaku dynasty, whose fierce penance on the Vindhya, the Shiva Purana tells, drew Lord Shiva to manifest here as a Jyotirlinga. The temple as it stands today has ancient origins, with its present medieval form shaped over centuries and renovated by the Holkar rulers — most famously the great queen Ahilyabai Holkar in the 18th century, who patronised ghats, temples and the dharamshalas of the island.

A living tradition unique to Omkareshwar holds that Lord Shiva resides on the island by day and crosses to Mamaleshwar to rest by night — which is why the Shayan (night) Aarti is performed at Mamaleshwar. The island Parikrama, about 7 km on foot past 68 sacred spots and ancient shrines, is itself a small pilgrimage, while the full Narmada Parikrama — walking both banks of the entire river — is among the holiest journeys in Hinduism, and pilgrims on it halt here for darshan.

Frequently asked questions

Why must I see both Omkareshwar and Mamaleshwar?
When Lord Shiva manifested here he took two forms — Omkareshwar on the island and Amareshwar / Mamaleshwar on the south bank — and they are counted together as the fourth Jyotirlinga. Tradition holds that the darshan is incomplete without seeing both, and that the Lord rests at Mamaleshwar by night, where the Shayan Aarti is performed.
What are the darshan timings at Omkareshwar?
The Mangala Aarti is at 5:00 AM, morning darshan runs about 5:30 AM to 12:30 PM, evening darshan about 4:00 PM to 8:30 PM, and the Shayan Aarti is at 8:30 PM (at Mamaleshwar). Timings shift on festival days, during Shravan and in the monsoon — confirm with us before travel.
What is the Mandhata island Parikrama?
The island Parikrama is a roughly 7 km barefoot circumambulation of Mandhata, taking 2–3 hours past 68 sacred spots and several ancient temples. It is a small pilgrimage in itself. The full Narmada Parikrama, walking both banks of the entire river, is among the holiest journeys in Hinduism and passes through Omkareshwar.
How do I reach Omkareshwar?
The nearest railhead is Omkareshwar Road / Mortakka (12 km) and the nearest airport is Devi Ahilyabai Holkar Airport, Indore (77 km), with Bhopal (260 km) as an alternative. The island is reached by bridge or the traditional boat crossing. We arrange flights, trains and door-to-door transfers paced for comfort.
Is Omkareshwar suitable for senior citizens and NRIs?
Yes. DharmikYatra is built especially for seniors, NRIs, solo-women travellers and first-time pilgrims. The island has steps and slopes, so we plan gentle pacing, help with the boat or bridge crossing, keep a coordinator with you throughout, and arrange timezone-friendly planning for NRI families.
